I have a background as an architectural designer and a facade consultant. I have always been interested in the technical areas of architecture and solutions that deal with physical limitations. While working at the facade engineering office, I could train intensely in the engineering and computational approach to solving problems. Leveraging my background in the architecture and engineering field, I’m eager to blend the classic tectonic beauty of architecture with high-tech computational design approaches.

Exploring errors in calculating U-value of curtain wall

Pointing out current low carbon policies are only concentrated in energy use of buildings, we suggested embodied energy of buildings should be considered as well. Calculating building energy consumption on top of embodied energy, we argued that true meaning of environmental concept is relevant with how many years the building will be used.

In Korea, U-value of opaque part is calculated by simple equation considering thickness and thermal conductance of certain material. This approach is also maintained when calculating opaque of curtain walls, which ignores the big influence of heat loss through metal frames and linear thermal bridge(psi). In this research, we compared results between existing table calculation method and thermal simulation, reporting irrationality of current U-value calculating method.
